Petrousa - Pirgi Gorge

Located in Petrousa
The gorge starts from the village of Pyrgi and ends at Petrousa. It is over 10 km long and is a pole of attraction for hikers. The flora of the gorge is extremely interesting as it is home to many wildflowers, xerophytes (i.e. plants adapted for life and growth with a limited water supply) and many trees. In addition, the gorge is a refuge for many species of fauna. The first organized crossing of the gorge took place in 1968 by a group of Italian hikers under the guidance of a local from the village. Further south, near Petrousa and within the gorge, lies a stone theatre of 4,500 seats. This theatre is the focal point of summer cultural and artistic events in the Prefecture of Drama. The people of Petrousa helped actively in the building of the theatre.
