“Davaniska” customary event

Located in Pyrgi
The event begins on the morning of Epiphany (January the 6th) and lasts three days. All the inhabitants of the village participate. Men are dressed in sheep and goat skins like “arkoudes” (bears), carrying bells in their waist. After visiting all the houses of the village, they gather in the square where they run, dance and bang people with their bells. Throughout the night, all villagers stay awake, drinking and dancing with the sounds of the bagpipe, the Macedonian lyre and the “dahare” (drum). The feast of the masquerades continues until January the 8th, which is the day of the "babo" (meaning “old woman” or “grandmother”).
