Frakto Forest - Virgn Forest of Central Rodopi

Located in Paranesti
To a great extent, the northern and central part of the Prefecture of Drama (in the border with Bulgaria) is characterized by its fascinating forest landscapes with their remarkable diversity in vegetation, wildlife and geology. Within the boundaries of Frakto Forest, the famous Rodopi Virgin Forest functions unhinderedly as a laboratory of nature. This forest, inaccessible to travelers, was designated as “virgin” in 1979 and soon after, in 1980, as a “Preserved Monument of Nature”. Since then, it came under a strict protection regime, with scientific research being the only activity permitted within its boundaries. Here, the presence of brown bears and Balkan chamois enrich the variety of life in a unique way!
