“Babiden” customary event

Located in Petrousa
The event takes place in Petrousa and is dedicated to "babo", meaning an old woman or a grandmother in Greek. It takes place during the twelve-day period between Christmas and Epiphany (6, 7 and 8 January) and its dominant symbol is the camel, an animal selected because of its high endurance to hunger and thirst. The "camel" is essentially a structure made of wood, iron, rags and animal skins that are carried by two young villagers. The "camel" wanders on January the 7th all over the village, inviting the residents to gather at the feast that will be held the next day. The procession of the masquerades and the "camel" starts from the central square of the village, to reach an open-air open space where a genuine folk festival is set up. The circular dances last until the evening. The residents and the visitors are offered boiled goat, wine and tsipouro.
