Litany

Located in Kali Vrisi
The customary event of “Litania” (meaning litany) takes place on the Thursday of the Bright Week in the village of Kali Vrisi. It is essentially a large procession of pedestrians, which also includes men on horseback. It begins after the mass at the chapel of Prophet Elias and ends at the village boundaries at the chapels of Zoodochos Pigi (Life-Giving Spring), Saints Constantine and Helen, Saint Anthony, Saint Athanasios and the Transfiguration (Metamorphoses) of our Saviour. In the head of the litany stands the priest of the village, who carries the icon of the Resurrection. Two men who chant the hymn “Christ is Risen” strike a great “semantron” (xylon) throughout the journey. In each chapel, a rectangle piece of holy bread from the mass of Maundy Thursday is left, wrapped in a white wax ball. What comes next, is a traditional feast.
