Prophet Ilias (Elijah) celebrations (12-20 July)

Located in Prosotsani
The day of Prophet Ilias (Elijah) was celebrated in Prosotsani by its Christian inhabitants from the late 19th century. Sometime in the years of the Ottoman rule, the church of Prophet Elias was built, around which took place a big feast and a stock exhibition every year. The feast lasted for 2-3 days and included many events and celebrations in which all residents, even Turks, participated. After liberation from the Ottoman Empire, and in particular in 1920, a monk named Nile from Raidestos of Asia Minor (currently Tekirdag) settled in the area.  He constructed a small hut and stayed there throughout the year, planting the area with trees. From the 1920s to 1940, the feast of Prophet Elias attracted many visitors, who came with their carriages and camped in the area on the eve of the feast. After World War II, the feast lost its glory until 1979 when a local family undertook to rebuild the chapel of Prophet Elijah. Later, in the 1990s, the site was restored, replanted and recreational infrastructure was created (courts, concert venues, etc.). Today, the festival is once again a pole attraction for many visitors and an important cultural event.
