The Church of "St. Athanasius the Great”

Located in Chepelare
The Church of "St. Athanasius the Great ” in Chepelare is an artistic cultural monument with the potential for status of a monument of local importance. It was built for 60 days in the autumn of 1834, with the active participation of the entire local population, despite the prohibition of the Turks. It was solemnly consecrated on July 11, 1835 by the Metropolitan of Plovdiv Nicephorus. In 1841 the oldest cellular school in the Central Rhodopes was built and started functioning in the churchyard.
