The Holy Monastery of the Virgin Mary of Ikosifinissa

Located in Proti Serres

The Holy Monastery is located at the boundaries of the Prefectures of Kavala and Serres, on the northern side of Pangaio Mountain, right past the village of Kormista. The monastery is a stavropegial one, i.e. it belongs to the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople (administratively) and to the Holy Metropolis of Drama (ecclesiastically). The tradition says that the famous miraculous icon that the Monastery hosts is the work of Apostle Loukas. The Apostle, when painting the face of the Virgin, realized that there was a slit in the wood surface and was disappointed. However, the Virgin Mary undertook to complete the work of Apostle Loukas herself, and so she “painted” herself on the wood surface along with the Holy Infant. The split is visible in the image of the Virgin Mary.
